What Is Minimalism And How Can You Start?

Minimalism is a popular home and lifestyle trend that is gaining traction around the world. At its core, minimalism is the practice of living with less in order to achieve a more simple and fulfilling life. More and more people are discovering the benefits of minimalism not just for their mental health but also for their day-to-day life.

Minimalism is more than just an empty home; it’s a lifestyle and mindset that focuses on simplifying your entire life. By eliminating the excess and clutter we take on and adopting a minimalist lifestyle we can bring numerous benefits to your life.

Here are five benefits of minimalism:

  1. Reduced Stress: Living a minimalist lifestyle helps you to declutter your life physically, emotionally and financially reducing your stress levels. You are not overwhelmed by an excess of unnecessary possessions or activities.
  2. More Time: When you minimize, you free up time and space in your life. You will have fewer things to take care of and stress over, leading to more time to focus on what matters most.
  3. Better Mental Health: A minimalist lifestyle helps to clear your mind and stay focused, which can lead to improved mental health.
  4. Enhanced Productivity: Minimalism helps you to prioritise what is essential in your life. This focus allows you to minimize distractions and increase productivity.
  5. Financial Benefits: Minimalism involves cutting out the excess, which means you spend less money on things you don’t need.

Put simply, minimalism means living with less clutter. This can mean something different to each person. For some, it’s getting rid of excess possessions, and simplifying your home décor. To others, it could be streamlining your daily routine and eliminating people-pleasing. Many people find that minimalism helps them to feel calmer, happier, and more fulfilled, as they are no longer weighed down by excess possessions or commitments.

Minimalism can also help you to save money and live more sustainably. When you stop buying unnecessary things and focus on only the essentials, you will naturally reduce the amount of stuff you consume. This can contribute to saving you money in the long run. Additionally, living a minimalist lifestyle can help you to reduce your environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

So, how can you start incorporating minimalism into your life?

One way, and this is how I began my journey; is to start decluttering your home. Take a look at everything you own and ask yourself what you really need and what you can do without. Sell, donate, or give away anything that you no longer need or use.

My rule for clutter is if I haven’t used it in a while and I can cheaply pick it up again if I ever did need it then it’s time to part. We tend to hold onto things… because one day! But how often does one day come along?

Another way to embrace minimalism is to simplify your daily routine. This can mean reducing the number of commitments you have in your life, saying no to activities or events that don’t bring you joy, or streamlining your daily tasks to make them more efficient.

Here are some steps you can follow to start your minimalism journey

  1. Declutter Your Space: Start by decluttering your home. Take your time, break rooms and sections down and go through all your possessions. Ask yourself does this item serve a purpose or bring you joy. Then get rid of things you no longer use or need by donating, selling, or recycling them.
  2. Streamline Your Finances: Look at your expenses and eliminate anything that is unnecessary. Review your budget and cut back on expenses that don’t align with your values or priorities anymore.
  3. Simplify Your Schedule: Take a look at your daily routine and simplify your schedule. Learn to say no to activities that don’t add value to your life. Reduce time spent on social media and watching TV and spend more time doing things that you enjoy.
  4. Focus on Quality Over Quantity: When you do need to buy things, focus on quality over quantity. Invest in items that will last longer and won’t need to be replaced as often. This could include clothing, appliances, furniture, and other items that are essential to your daily life.
  5. Practice Gratitude: Living a minimalist lifestyle is a choice to live with less, but it does not mean depriving yourself of what you truly appreciate. Learn to appreciate what you have by practising gratitude. Take time to reflect on what you have achieved and how far you have come from where you have started.

Minimalism is about prioritising the things that are most important to you and simplifying your life in order to live a more fulfilling and intentional existence. By focusing on the essentials and letting go of what no longer serves you, you can create a happier, healthier, and more meaningful life.
